I love google and microsoft and apple. Is that allowed? Take one segment of my technology use - email + calendar. I bought my domain from google and therefore can use gmail to host my email (why not for 3gb of free storage and great reliability). That said, I read and compose the bulk of that email from Outlook 2007 on the desktop. Partly because the outlook experience is familiar, but also because i think it is superior to the gmail web interface. On the mobile side, i use the iPhone for my email, connecting via gmail’s IMAP support. So there i have all three. Calendar is similar. I just starting using google calendar to share with my colleagues. I use the calendar sync program to connect it with outlook which is slick because it functions as a bridge between multiple machines running outlook as well. And of course for the mobile calendar, i sync the iPhone with outlook (on the desktop). A couple takeaways:
- Microsoft and apple are making a lot more money on me than google (in this segment). I paid $10 to register my domain with google, but i rarely use gmail online, so i don’t see many ads. MS gets me for Office 2007. Apple gets the iPhone hardware revenue and the service revenue.
- BUT, google is earning my love and loyalty and therefore has a lot of upside potential with me. I will basically try any product they put out. If they can give me an experience close to outlook, i will ditch MS. They are getting closer, but not their yet. So MS is the middle man that I need now, but can very well lose them down the road. (on excel the MS story is stronger)
- MS will never have a chance with me on mobile (in the foreseeable future). I would try an android device, but never a windows mobile device. This is in part because gmail as a free email host is unmatched, and the iPhone integration with gmail is great. And now, even if i get an exchange server, the iPhone is more compelling. And what’s interesting here is that mobile is the growth area in my life. I am doing more than ever from my mobile device, so it is increasingly important. Also, it is an area that I expect to pay. Unlike online services and software where i have a hard time paying.
